Teal Forecasts 176 GEO Satellites Worth $28.3-B Will Be Built and Launched Worldwide From 2006-2015

Teal Group Corp. has projected a total of 176 GEO commercial satellites, worth $28.3 billion, will be built and launched during 2006-2015. In a new 10-year market forecast for geostationary orbit commercial satellites, the study said the entry into the market of at least a dozen new satellite operators will also result in orders during the next two years, which means that a relatively high number of satellites should continue to be launched in 2008-2009. New Missile Warning Satellite Built by Lockheed Completes Critical Functional Test Milestone

Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) announced on Tuesday it has successfully completed an extensive test phase of the first Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) geosynchronous orbit (GEO) satellite. SBIRS will provide the U.S. with significantly improved missile warning capabilities and support other critical mission areas simultaneously including missile defense, technical intelligence and battlespace characterization. NASA to Invest $500-M in Private Sector Space Flight with SpaceX, Rocketplane-Kistler

NASA said it is making an unprecedented investment in commercial space transportation services with the hope of creating a competitive market for supply flights to the International Space Station (ISS). NASA said the two industry partners who won the Commercial Orbital Transportation System (COTS) award last week will receive a combined total of approximately $500 million to help fund the development of reliable, cost-effective access to low-Earth orbit. The agency is using its Space Act authority to facilitate the demonstration of these new capabilities. Full Story

Boeing Completes GOES-P Weather Satellite Thermal Vacuum Testing

Boeing [NYSE: BA] has announced that GOES-P, the third of three Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) built for NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has successfully completed testing designed to ensure that the spacecraft will operate in the extremely harsh environs of space. Boeing said GOES-P underwent a battery of tests that examined and recorded how the spacecraft's sensitive instruments will operate in the extreme temperatures of deep space. Full Story

NASA Awards $101.7-M NOAA GOES-R Instrument Contract

NASA, in coordination with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES-R) Program, has selected Assurance Technology Corporation for a $101.7 million dollar contract. This contract is for the Space Environment In-Situ Suite (SEISS), which will provide data for monitoring space environments as an instrument on the next generation of GOES. Full Story

Sea Launch's Zenit Rocket Successfully Launches Koreasat 5 Satellite

Sea Launch Company successfully delivered on August 22 the Koreasat 5 communications satellite to geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO). Early data indicate the spacecraft is accurately positioned and in excellent condition. A Zenit-3SL vehicle lifted off at 8:27 pm PDT (03:27 GMT, Aug. 22) from the Odyssey Launch Platform, positioned at 154 degrees West Longitude in the equatorial Pacific. All systems performed nominally throughout flight. Full Story 

Ball Aerospace Delivers Orbital Express NextSat Spacecraft

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has delivered the NextSat Commodities Spacecraft (NextSat/CSC) to Boeing Company's Orbital Express (OE) program for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Scheduled to launch late this year, OE is designed to demonstrate technological readiness of autonomous satellite servicing. “On-schedule delivery of the next-generation OE spacecraft furthers the development of robotic refueling, configuration and repair of spacecraft on orbit,” said David L. Taylor, president and chief executive officer of Ball Aerospace. Full Story

Hughes Completes Over-the-Air Testing of SpaceWay Broadband IP Capabilities

Hughes Network Systems, LLC has announced it has successfully completed a 30-day program of rigorous over-the-air (OTA) testing of the broadband IP capabilities of DirecTV’s SpaceWay 2 satellite. The SpaceWay system was designed and developed by Hughes as a next-generation, Ka-band broadband satellite system to employ on-board traffic switching and routing capability. Combined with many other advances in satellite technology, such as 10 Gbps overall capacity, fast packet switching, and spot beam forming, Hughes said its SpaceWay 3 satellite will usher in a new world of bandwidth-on-demand satellite services. Air Force Awards $22-M Contract to ATK to Develop Composite Production Technologies for Expendable Launch Structures

The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has awarded Alliant Techsystems a five-year $22 million contract to develop automated composite technologies designed to reduce the manufacturing costs, and increase the performance of large composite launch vehicle structures. Work on the Large Automated Production of Expendable Launch Structures (LAPELS) contract will be performed at ATK facilities in Clearfield, Utah and Iuka, Mississippi, the company said. There are 17 specific initiatives in the LAPELS program including: low cost tooling, filament winding techniques, integrated health monitoring, thermal protection systems, and tape lamination. Telenor Satellite Acquires Satcom Business of Norse Technology

Telenor Satellite Services, a subsidiary of Telenor of Norway (Oslo Stock Exchange:TEL and NASDAQ:TELN), has purchased the satellite communications activities of Norse Technology AS and has acquired the majority of stock in the Norwegian-based Norse Electronics AS. Telenor Satellite said it intends to re-establish Norse Electronics AS as the leading integrator of communications services for the Oil & Offshore industry. According to Telenor Satellite, the acquisition of Norse Electronics also serves to enhance the company’s capabilities to deliver complete communications packages and services for the Oil & Offshore market. GlobeCast Launches Korean TV Channel KBS World into the Middle East

International Korean television channel KBS World has now reached the Middle East following a distribution partnership between leading content management and delivery company, GlobeCast, Korea’s public broadcaster, Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) and satellite operator Arabsat. KBS World is received by Arabsat from the PAS10 satellite in Jordan’s Media City, where it is multiplexed and uplinked onto the GlobeCast’s platform on Arabsat 2D for Free-to-Air DTH distribution throughout the Middle East.  Full Story

XM Radio Expands NavTraffic Data Service to 44 Major U.S. Markets

XM Satellite Radio announced on Aug. 2 the expansion of its NavTraffic nationwide satellite traffic information service launching in 13 additional U.S. metro markets during the third quarter of 2006. XM said this latest expansion brings the real-time traffic data service to 44 major U.S. markets, coast-to-coast. The 13 new XM NavTraffic markets include: Austin, TX; Buffalo - Niagara Falls, NY; Charlotte, NC; Columbus, OH; Hartford - New Britain - Middletown, CT; Indianapolis, IN; Kansas City, KS; Las Vegas, NV; Memphis, TN; Nashville, TN; Norfolk - Virginia Beach/Newport News, VA; Sarasota - Bradenton, FL; and West Palm Beach - Boca Raton, FL.
